Always a complicating factor when visiting disaster areas. Doubly so I’m mountainous areas where relief efforts rely on aerial assets.
Also, outside of Asheville and Boone, these are heavily red areas. A few thousand casualties / suppressed turnout may flip the state blue.

I understand the concern for the safety of air assets (helicopters), but the private citizens who are responding seem pretty good at coordinating. Of course, the flight restrictions are spawning conspiracy theories.

Katrina was wall-to-wall coverage. Telethons on television (where Kanye said that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” next to a stunned Mike Myers). What changed?

Good, thoughtful explainer on the confluence of events that lead to the flooding. Apparently they had storms before, that saturated the ground and contributed to flooding. Then there is the storm just sitting there, dumping up to 40 inches of rain on areas.

No Congress. Too busy running for re-election.
Some reports of looting.
Truckers organized a convoy of water. They claim they had their tires slashed. Probably related to this:

Not sure if the Internet ate my post. Verizon data is having an outage.
I’m glad you’re safe. Any relief organization recommendations beyond what I posted?
