ParticipantI did some math. If the northeastern states (and Louisiana, Michigan and DC) had the US average number of deaths as of Monday (548 deaths per million, NOT adjusted for the inflated deaths in those states), our total death numbers would be over 43,000 lower (43,038). Strangely, Pennsylvania issued one of the orders, but managed to contain its outbreak in March-June much better than NY / NJ. Maybe because it was revealed that the health officer pulled their own parent out of a nursing home just before the order was issued. The uproar may have saved lives.

ParticipantIn the OANN defamation suit (Maddow called them “Russian propaganda), Maddow’s lawyers argued that her show is not a show about facts. The Court dismissed the defamation suit on an anti-SLAPP motion because Maddow’s show is one of “opinion and rhetorical hyperbole,” and Maddow engages in an “exaggeration of the facts.”

ParticipantHahaha. Is Lorraine Ali comparing a virtual convention with pre-taped speeches to… say scripted television or heavily edited reality shows? And she’s a “television critic?”
This is why I’m so down on so-called journalists and media people. They try to tell people what to think (as our moral and intellectual superiors), but they’re essentially just putting their biases on display (and likely so out of touch with reality that their biases are based on lazy tropes). Other than linking to her criticism of the DNC (comparing it to a telethon), there’s no analysis. No discussion of real people’s reactions (the actual audience, not the media or the twittersphere). It’s easy to snipe at a bunch of political speeches, delivered to an empty room in a vacuum, but her main critique (“branding disaster”) doesn’t even make sense. We’ll see on an objective level what the effects of these conventions are, but I wouldn’t give this “critic’s” opinion any thought, other than to diminish my opinion of her and her writing.

Participant*during* the Democratic National Convention. We’ll see if there’s any convention bump this year. I have not watched any of it so far, but I can’t imagine that the Republicans will do a worse job than the Democrats. If there’s one thing Trump knows, it’s entertainment.
Running on an actual record is a powerful thing. (A glaring example was trotting out John Kerry to say Trump’s foreign policy is a mess after the UAE-Israel normalization of relations agreement). You want to run on COVID (zero deaths)? Only the most partisan believe that some alternative reality president would have achieved zero cases and zero deaths, and trotting out Andrew Cuomo to tell us shoving COVID cases into nursing homes was a good idea won’t play outside of New England.
The media can scoff all it wants, but the game is up, and nobody should care what the media thinks anymore. Also, Twitter is not real life. Stirring up postal conspiracies in the media among celebrities and the already susceptible / weak-minded / low information / willing to hang onto any thread Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferers isn’t going to move the needle.

ParticipantRealistically, the moon exerting less of a gravitational pull on the Earth will mean dampened tides, and potentially the loss of tide pool habitats. It may slow down some of the flooding from global warming? In addition, many animals have cyclical behavior tied to lunar cycles.

ParticipantLet’s face it, 30,400 taxpayers isn’t enough. Plus the whole problem with a wealth tax is that if you set it too high, you’re going to drain people’s wealth down faster than the wealthy can increase their wealth, and then… voila, they aren’t wealthy enough anymore. We’ll see if the 10-year tail if you move passes dormant commerce clause / freedom of movement muster.
If there is a silver lining in this, this proposed wealth tax is the perfect experiment to see if there is an effect on professional athletes and free agency. Let’s see if LeBron wants to stay with the Lakers. The Clippers just signed a bunch of players (Paul George, Kahwi Leonard), and we’ll see how quickly they move in this tax environment. What about the other sports leagues?
I could care less about the empty headed Hollywood types. Athletes seem to respond to monetary incentives, and with the inflation of top end salaries, this will definitely be a hit on some of those salaries. On the MLB list alone, that’s Mike Trout, David Price, Manny Machado, Clayton Kershaw over $30M. Albert Pujols (!), Buster Posey, Justin Upton, Johnny Cueto, Eric Hosmer, Jeff Samardzija, Kenley Jansen, Brandon Belt, Khris Davis, Brandon Crawford, and Evan Longoria are over the $15M threshold. Granted, not all of that income = wealth, but presumably these guys saved a significant amount of that salary, especially the older guys.
On the NBA side, there’s Steph Curry, Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Paul George over $30M. Then Anthony Davis, Harrison Barnes (!), Kent Bazemore (!), Draymond Green, and JR Smith over $15M.

Participant“Portlandia” is a documentary.
I’ve had several people from Portland say that is more truth than fiction.

ParticipantDon’t forget postage stamps.

The GOP are a bunch of idiots. There should be a voter registration booth in every gun shop. Not only do you have to be eligible to vote in order to buy a gun, but I’m assuming you’re motivated to buy a gun because you will also be motivated to vote in November.
Seriously, though. Forever stamps outpace inflation adjusted bonds, and a bunch of other asset classes. And they have an independent utility! I’m not arguing that guns and ammo aren’t valuable (they are), but don’t sleep on forever stamps.

Keep donating to her campaign so her new husband can get paid. She hates capitalism and America, but she’s a fast learner when it comes to American political corruption.

ParticipantYou left out the Kanye West convention. He can still get on the ballot in most swing states and some of the larger electoral college states.
