I have a friend who has a son in a Physics program at UWisc. (Why he’s there instead of Stanford, or an elite Ivy or UC is another story). I’ve been sending these types of job market updates, because what we’re seeing doesn’t make sense from a supply and demand point of view.

Why are American Physics, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science graduates facing high unemployment rates? Did too many people major in those fields? Are American universities churning out unqualified graduates? I doubt it.

ParticipantI was joking with my wife that the Chinese will need to figure out another avenue to bribe officials. Reduced wine and alcohol consumption is a world-wide issue, even in Europe. Maybe good overall.

Iran’s leaders acted irrationally throughout this until the Qatar base attack (which is a classic symbolic end to hostilities). Don’t walk away from the guy who invented walking away (hyperbole), and don’t call the bluff of someone whose entire foreign policy is based on “Try me.” Glad that a relatively peaceful end came so quickly.
I do hope that the Ayatollah decides to negotiate. Persia / Iran has a lot of potential if it invests its oil wealth in its people instead of terrorist proxies.

ParticipantNigeria is suffering from a series of regional conflicts, including the religious conflict in the North and Noethwest. Disturbingly, Boko Haram’s activity appears to be spreading.

ParticipantNow it’s just an excuse to prevent all law enforcement from doing their jobs. We’ve seen it in MN, CO, and Los Angeles.

ParticipantI lived in Las Vegas for a while. Outside of the Strip, people were generally friendly. Lots of Mormons, midwesterners, and people in hospitality.
There were also a lot of Angelenos on the roads, and people behaving like a–es on the Strip (often drunk). It’s also a money town, and people on a losing streak aren’t the best company.
